I am Marcelo Alonso and I live in the Seattle area.
I’m a finance professional with more than 30 years of experience in financial planning and analysis. I’ve been lucky to work for top notch organizations and leaders. It allowed me to experience first-hand (and perform at) best-in-class finance teams and processes.
As part of this journey, I have a 22-year career at Microsoft spanned different parts of finance, and business analytics, global and international roles, supporting sales and marketing organizations (field and GTM; commercial and consumer), professional services (consulting) and engineering. I also have experience with Business Analytics.
Additionally, I have experience on non-profit (Providence Health Services), hospitality (Expedia Group) and small business (Seattle Aviation Solutions). Plus, Eastman Kodak early in my career.
As part of my accomplishments, I have several examples of business insight and supporting senior executives, helping them to deliver business impact. Other examples are leading the rhythm of finance (Global FP&A roles, close, forecast, target setting and budget), financial modeling, data visualization, development of planning, forecasting, and reporting framework and tools at global scale. I am recognized as a trusted advisor. I also have extensive experience leading and developing teams.
I’m proud not only of the depth of successful work done, but also of the breadth of the experience.
I have a BS in Economics from Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and an Executive MBA from FIA/USP.
On top of great analytical skills, that I leverage to deliver business value (or impact), I have great knowledge of some of the modern tools and approaches. Because I faced business challenges, and I used those tools and approaches to solve them.
I use Power BI in some unique approaches. Obviously, data visualization, dashboards and reports are important (and cool). I just go beyond. I leverage it to optimize my work as an analyst. I have great understanding of DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) and I leverage it to build robust models to make superior financial and business analysis.
But I don't think about Power BI as the only modern tool. I extract a lot of value from MS Excel, which is even better with Power BI. And it is familiar to your organization and extremely flexible. I put together models and reports in Power BI and Excel connecting them (on both directions). Making real impact to the business.
Additionally, I like to have all of them orchestrated with SharePoint and MS Teams to lead to broader collaboration and consumption.
Using those tools (in general already paid by your organization) to optimize the results the finance team can provide and to put a good amount of power and flexibility on the analyst's hand.
Finally, an example of non-finance expertise about me. All branding materials (like our logo and the video on the home page) were produced exclusively with PowerPoint.
You won't find a lot of professionals with my background, my financial acumen and technical knowledge.
